Prof. dr sci. med. Slavko Simeunović
Prof. Dr Slavko Simeunović, a specialist in pediatrics and cardiology, holds a doctoral degree in medical sciences. He is a full professor at the School of Medicine, University of Belgrade, and has served as the head of the cardiology department at the University Children’s Hospital in Belgrade for many years. He has undergone professional training in Boston (Harvard Medical School, Children’s Hospital Medical Center Boston), Houston (Baylor College of Medicine, Texas Children’s Hospital), London, and Berlin.
In 1979, he performed the first balloon Rashkind septostomy for TGA, a life-saving procedure for newborns. He was among the first to perform balloon valvuloplasty of the pulmonary artery, just three years after its first implementation worldwide.
He was awarded the October Prize of the City of Belgrade in 1992. As an author and co-author, he has published over 500 scientific papers in leading international and domestic indexed journals, monographs, books, and conference proceedings. He is the editor of the pediatric cardiology chapter in the textbook “Cardiology 2000.” He has participated as a lecturer in numerous domestic and international medical congresses and symposiums.
He served as the Vice Dean for Research and President of the Scientific Council at the School of Medicine, University of Belgrade. He initiated and founded the English-language medical studies in Belgrade in 1995. He was an expert for the Federal Ministry of Health in the field of pediatric cardiology, a member of the Republic Commission for Medical Sciences, and a member of the National Committee for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention of the Republic of Srpska.
He is a member of the Committee for Cardiovascular Pathology of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, a Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology, a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, a member of the Editorial Board for the International Journal of Cardiology, and a member of the Scientific Board of the Mediterranean Association of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery. He has served as the Vice President of the Greek and Serbian Physicians’ Association and the Vice President of the Balkan Association of Pediatric Cardiologists and Cardiac Surgeons.
Prof. Dr Slavko Simeunović is married to a primary care physician specializing in physiatry. They have two children, twins, who are both professors at the School of Medicine, University of Belgrade. Their son, Dr. Dejan Simeunović, is a cardiologist, and their daughter, Dr. Dijana Risimić, is an ophthalmologist.
Currently, Prof. Dr Slavko Simeunović is the director and owner of the private clinic Profmedika – Simeunović in Belgrade.
